WHAT IS A FRESH 48-HOUR SESSION?

Fresh 48 hour sessions aim to do just that. To capture youth baby’s firsts right there is the comfort of your hospital rooms you welcome new life to your family. After you have settled into your postpartum room, these sessions take place in the daylight hours before you are discharged from the hospital.

Being invited into a hospital room to meet a baby that is just hours old is one of my greatest honors. My goal is to make this First 48 session effortless for you. Among the hustle and bustle of the hospital, I hope that this is a moment where we can slow time and document your family as you welcome your brand new baby.

Style:
Your session will be captured in a natural lifestyle fashion. The images will be natural and unposed while we capture the your family and the breathtaking bond the forms in those first few hours afters your baby’s birth.

Sessions are about 45 minutes and they will include emotion filled images that will tell your family’s story. Fresh 48 sessions are not meant to replace the traditional newborn session; rather, they are another way to document one the most important moments in your life and celebrate your baby’s arrival through powerful images.

Your images will tell your story by capturing all the details… the tiny hat, the room, hospital blanket, wrinkles, flaky skin, tiny feet, hands, hospital bracelets – all of it.

What is captured…
While I’ll be there to help guide you and your family when transitioning between images, there is very little “posing” involved as this session is meant to be more lifestyle and natural.

The setting…
Your postpartum room is a special place. This is the room that you’ll experience many “firsts” with your newborn… where you’re beginning to bond as a family and getting to know your little one. I typically start with first capturing the essence of the room. Again, don’t worry about de-cluttering the room , this session is more of a lifestyle approach to capture the full nature of the room so you’ll always remember it… The overnight bags, the snacks, the bassinet, luggage bags, any flowers/cards/gifts visitors may have brought by already, the whiteboard with notes from your nurses, etc. I also always like to capture the other hospital details like the room number, the waiting room, the hospital building, and overall landscape… it find that it helps tie the story together.

The details…
There are so many variations of detailed photographs to capture during this time… baby snuggled in their hospital bassinet, the hospital bracelets, baby’s first portrait, breastfeeding, skin-to-skin, daddy and baby, mommy and baby, meeting siblings, the first family portrait… and all the tiny details of baby’s hair, hands, feet, ears, toes, etc.

The emotion…
These natural, candid moments are some of my favorite and truly make my heart sing! Parents that are holding their newborn child in their hands are full of happiness and raw emotion so it’s easy to capture that “awe” filling the room. The way a new mother looks at their baby, the proud look in dad’s eyes, the loving touch of a big brother/sister, the way a husband now looks at his wife now as a mother, the look of a baby staring at their parents… these are truly breathtaking moments that I am honored to witness.

*When:                                                                                                                                      The Fresh 48 Session takes place within the first 48 hours of birth.  It can take place at the hospital or birth center and it will last approximately 45 minutes. Due to the unpredictability of labor it’s important that we stay in touch leading up to the big day! Once you’re in active labor, typically your partner or someone on your birth team will email or text me (the sooner the better!) to let me know so I can prep my gear and clear my schedule. Once baby is here we will schedule a time during daylight hours fir your session to take place. At Aimee Pool Photography we have three photographers on our team so if Aimee is not available then Amanda or Kassandra will photograph the session.

Do I need permission from the hospital?
Please ask and ensure photographers are allowed. In almost all cases they are treated as just a visitor so it’s generally okay.

What if my baby needs to be in the NICU?
In this event we will stay in touch and it is handled on a case-by-case basis. We may need to work with hospital staff to find out what we are and aren’t able to do. In the event that I am unable to photograph the Fresh 48 as planned due to these circumstances, your deposit will be applied to a future session.

Can I book a Fresh 48 and Newborn session?
Yes, please! They are perfect compliments to each other. One is no substitute to the other.
